Nespresso Milk Frother Review

Summary

The Nespresso Aeroccino Plus is an automatic milk frother used for creating various hot or cold coffee drinks.  Just pour milk into the Aeroccino Plus kettle, push a button and it will quickly make a dense milk foam to pour over your coffee or espresso, so you can make yourself a café latte, macchiato or cappuccino. You can even use the milk froth for chocolate drinks.

The Aeroccino Plus is part of the Nespresso Coffee system—which is known for producing European style, restaurant-quality espresso drinks for discerning home baristas. But the Aeroccino Plus is also a stand alone product that can be used to froth milk for drinks made by other coffee machines, regardless of brand.

Some quotes of the Nespresso Aeroccino Plus on Amazon:

“If you love cappuccinos or cafe-lattes, get one!”

“The new Plus version is a significant improvement over the original and a real pleasure to use. Its froth is more dense and with much less un-frothed hot milk.”

“Brilliant little machine! Make perfect thick, rich foam and hot milk for any coffee drink! I never have to go to Starbucks again!

“I love my Nespresso machine and the Aeroccino Plus. It makes great froth with amazing little micro bubbles.”

Features

The Aeroccino Plus can automatically make froth out of hot or cold milk with a total capacity of 4.4 oz.

To froth milk, the Aeroccino Plus uses an electric coil hidden under the interior flat bottom. Instead of the typical clamp-on propeller that is tedious to clean, the Nespresso Aeroccino Plus uses a magnetically attached mini propeller or a wire whisk attachment that sits on a sealed bump. Both magnetic attachments do not need to be de-clamped. The risk of getting milk inside the motor is also greatly reduced.

To use hot milk, simply pour no more than 4.4 oz into the kettle, press the button then hot milk froth is produced in about a minute. For cold milk froth, the button must be pressed longer (about 2 seconds) and the indicator light turns blue instead of red.

The non-stick interior coating prevents milk burns.

To clean, just use dishwashing soap and water. The new Aeroccino Plus can be submerged in water, but it is not dishwasher safe.

The machine measures 4.1 x 4.1 x 6.7 inches.

Tips for Using the Aeroccino Plus

Most people think it is the fat content in milk that makes for better frothing. In fact, protein content is what’s important for producing better froth. Even skim milk will froth nicely, provided that it has a good amount of protein in it. Soy milk can froth beautifully as well, proving it’s the protein, not the fat, that matters.

After some experimentation, I now use either soy milk or Garelick Over The Moon cow’s milk, which has 10 grams of protein per serving. I get great, dense froth from this milk. If this brand isn’t available in your area, just look through the nutrition information on the box and go for milk that has at least 10 grams of protein per serving. Note that regular Garelick milk only has 8 grams. You can also experiment with you local fresh milk to see which froths best.

Assessment

 Pros

Produces high quality froth, nearly as good as barista hand frothing—but minus all the time and hard labor. Pour in milk, press a button and you have froth in a minute—hot or cold.

It’s also a breeze to clean. The electrical parts are sealed well enough that you can run the entire machine under water. I like the magnetic attachments you can easily put in and out, remove and clean. No more burned milk, as was the case with previous Aeroccino models (without the Plus). This model also has a bigger milk capacity.

 Cons

Not much, really. But if Nespresso were to make some improvements maybe the Aeroccino can produce hotter froth and have a bigger kettle size or capacity to produce more milk froth.

Alternatives to the Nespresso Aeroccino Plus

Nespresso does have another milk frother, in the Aeroccino 3194 model.  This sells for about the same price as the Aeroccino Plus, and can actually froth at a higher capacity than the Plus model. The maximum capacity for preparing hot milk with the Aeroccino 3194 is 8.12oz or 240ml. For cold milk froth, capacity is 4.06oz or 120ml.

Like the Aeroccino Plus, this is a fully automatic froth maker. It can froth cappuccino milk in 50 seconds and hot latte milk in 80 seconds.

The Aeroccino 3194 comes in 3 colors, as seen in the photo.

Conclusion

If you are a home barista that likes good cappuccinos, macchiatos, and lattes… then you should definitely have an automatic milk frother like the Nespresso Aeroccino Plus. I have been using mine practically everyday for almost a year and it produces froth I’m quite happy with. Just make sure you use quality, high protein milk. The froth comes very close to professionally hand frothed milk—but without all the labor, time and mess involved. This automatic milk frother from Nespresso is highly recommended!
